The people of Reading were given a taste of the wealth of dance styles the town has to offer at the first ever Reading Dance Showcase on Sunday 7th June at Rivermead Leisure Complex.
Organised and sponsored by Dancia International’s new Reading branch, the day was filled with back-to-back performances by over 30 local dance schools and clubs.
The Mayor of Reading opened the event, and the presentation was slickly handled by professional voice artist and presenter, Andy Rowe.
Jude Chapman, owner of Dancia Reading, said: “We have an incredibly vibrant dance scene here in Reading, and we wanted to show people the huge range of dance styles available for them to learn. Throughout the day, we saw performances ranging from Ballroom to Bollywood, Tap to Tango, Street to Salsa and Latin to Lindyhop.”
As well as watching 36 dance performances throughout the day, members of the public were able to enjoy free taster classes in a wide range of dance styles. The exhibition area gave people an opportunity to speak face-to-face with dance teachers from over 15 local dance schools and clubs, and to stock up on dancewear at the Dancia International stand.
Over 1,000 people attended the event, with profits of £2,500 being donated to Reading Area Charities Together (RACT).
Ann Piper, Chairperson of RACT said: “We feel privileged to be part of the Reading Dance Showcase. RACT members are already every day helping local people, including those who are older or disabled; families or communities that are in need of a little extra support and people who are financially or educationally disadvantaged, as well as helping to make Reading a safer and better place for us all to live. With the money raised from this event we’ll be able to make a difference to even more people of all ages living in our local communities."
Hilary Thomas of Wargrave Ballet School said: “Thank you for a great opportunity for our children. They loved performing and I was delighted with them. It was fantastically well organised - congratulations. Please find us a space for next year!
Similar positive feedback from participating schools has led Dancia Reading to announce that it intends to repeat the event next year.
